What does Fine Free mean?
The Plainville Public Library announced today that it is joining neighboring libraries in eliminating late fines on a majority of its items, effective April 4, 2025. This initiative aims to increase accessibility and encourage community engagement.
No Fines on items that automatically renew...
2 week items:
New adult books Audio materials DVDs Puzzles Puppets |
4 Week items:
All Children's Books All Young Adult books All Large Type Books Adult Fiction and Non-Fiction |
Children’s books, audio and video materials, as well as adult and young adult books, audio, and video with 2-week and 4-week loan periods, will no longer incur late fees. Additionally, the library is clearing all existing late fees for these item types from patron accounts.
“The Board of Library Trustees recognizes that late fines do not effectively expedite the return of materials and often deter patrons from utilizing library services,” said Melissa Campbell, Library Director. “We want to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels encouraged to explore the vast resources available at the Plainville Public Library.”
To further enhance convenience, the library automatically renews eligible items for one additional loan period, provided there are no holds. Patrons can stay informed about their checkouts through email or text notifications, the SAILS Mobile app, or by visiting plainvillepubliclibrary.org.
The Plainville Public Library invites the community to take advantage of this new fine-free policy and rediscover the joy of borrowing.

What items still have Fines?
Please note that late fines will still apply to high-demand items such as Library of Things items, museum passes, InDemand books, video games, and kits, as these items do not automatically renew.
