​Associate Librarian - Technical Services (Part Time)

The Plainville Public Library is a small town library seated halfway between Boston and Providence. We are looking for someone to join our team who can maintain our growing collection of over 45,000 items with a Library of Things and museum pass reservation software. The Associate Librarian - Technical Services is responsible for the preparation of all materials for public use and their written or electronic records. In absence of the Director this person assumes charge of the library and may assume the duties of the circulation staff in their absence.

Illustrative Examples of Work:
Responsible for the preparation of all print and non-print materials for public use, including but not limited to: jackets, files, labels, barcodes, date due, repackaging, security, item identification and mending of items.
  • Assign all new materials received by the library proper cataloging and call numbers according to the Dewey Decimal system and the American Library Association Cataloging Rules.
  • ​Create catalog records and museum pass reservation records and/or modify/delete existing records. Maintains these files accurately and timely, providing statistics as required.
  • Trains and supervises work of subordinate employees and volunteers.
  • Interprets policies and procedures and recommends procedural changes as necessary.
  • Provides inventory control of library and office supplies. Organizes supply shelves and file cabinets.
  • Checks incoming orders for accuracy and maintains a backorder list.
  • Assists with opening and closing procedures and at circulation desk as needed.
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory in person, online or on the phone.
  • May represent the library at various meetings and programs.
  • Processing Passport Applications according to US Department of State regulations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidates must have knowledge of library technologies along with hands- on knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials, and practices, especially cataloging. They should demonstrate organizational skills and leadership abilities with the ability to prioritize. Candidates need familiarity with computers and applications in relation to the Library ILS system and how the public will interact with the data. They will have the ability to use digital resources, ebooks, social media and internet connected devices. Candidates will be able to deal with the public in a courteous and efficient manner and be able to interpret and relate information effectively.

Qualifications: 
A college degree is required. Graduate degree in library science, a plus. Must have the qualifications to become a certified Passport Acceptance Agent.
Part Time - 24 hours per week plus 1 Saturday a month 
$23.25/hour, vacation, sick time, full benefits, Norfolk County Retirement
