When You Read, You Score!
The Bruins install reading rinks in four Massachusetts communities.
By Abigail Seaver - BostonBruins.com
Plainville, MA - The Boston Bruins moved forward with their summer program,
"When You Read, You Score!" by visiting the Plainville Public Library in
Plainville, MA this week, bringing furniture and new books to the town
library.
The Bruins Mascot, Blades, and the Bruins Ice Girls were on hand helping to deliver hockey stick furniture installed in the middle of the libraryfor a “Reading Rink” -- a place where children can read their favorite books in a Black & Gold inspired area. This month the “When You Read, You Score!” program will also donate furniture to the Woburn Public Library and the South Hadley Public library. The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MLBC) chose all three libraries for the program. The Newbury Town Library (0 Lunt Street Byfield, MA 01922) was the first to receive a "Reading Rink" during the Bruins fourth annual Development Camp. The Bruins prospects led story-time in the new Reading Rink, helped children plant sunflower seeds, guided the children through a hockey obstacle course and planted perennials in the library’s Memorial Garden. Children from Plainville not only got the chance to meet and greet Blades and the Ice Girls, but they also got listen to local story teller and author Mark Binder talk about his youth and being a Bruins fan. When story time was over, refreshments were served in familiar hockey themed shapes. blue and red line cookies, hockey puck brownies, and hockey stick cookies all had the Black & Gold insignia on it. Kids then got to take part in different activities such as making paper Bruins jerseys, playing NHL 2K10 on the Nintendo Wii, and reading books selected by different Bruins players. Tim Thomas selected "The Lord of the Rings," as well as "The Hobbit," for the older kids to read. For the younger children he choose a youth hockey favorite, "Z is For Zamboni." Cam Neely chose many classics such as "A Light in the Attic," "Goodnight Moon," "Where the Sidewalk Ends" - and of course - "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" Milan Lucic also got in on the fun, choosing a timeless book Massachusetts' own Dr. Seuss -- "Green Eggs and Ham." At the end of the day the kids left with goodie bags, autographs, and rented copies of their favorite Bruins players’ reading book selections. Even in the dead heat of summer, hockey and learning is strong and thriving at the Plainville Public Library Reading Rink. The Boston Bruins first teamed up with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners in 2009 when the organizations formed the "When You Read You Score" summer reading program. The program incorporates unique theme each summer to encourage young people to keep reading during their summer break. Studies show that reading over the summer helps kids maintain skills they've learned over the academic year and grow towards the skills required for the next school year. The Bruins Summer Reading Program "When You Read You Score," in conjunction with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners estimated 90,000 children across Massachusetts will participate in the Environmental Reading Program. |
